Analysis of Market Position with Data Mining and the Self-Organizing Maps

Companies are operating more and more on the global market. It is important to consider companies' performance on the different markets and in the different countries. It is also important to clarify to what extent the economical trends of countries differ from each other.

The analysis have been made with the technique of Self-Organizing Maps (SOM), which enables simultaneous analysis of several variables.

Some paper and telecom companies all over the world have been selected to further considerations. The time frame of the study was the period 1995 -1999.

A number of benchmarks were performed, and the results analyzed based on information contained in the annual reports. The results of the study indicate that SOM maps can be feasible tools for the financial benchmarking of large amounts of financial data.
